Warli Art

Design Process

Based on the brief, we had to find a pattern from our culture to create in p5.js. I chose Warli Art, which is a tribal art from Maharashtra, India. It is usually a raw form or art painted on browns or brick red walls using white. It is made of simple shapes and lines and there are various patterns that can be created in it.

Typically, the human figures are in a spiral or circle around a center object or figure. I used this basic idea to create a pattern.

Final Pattern

I used the mouseX position to zoom in and zoom out of the pattern with the help of scale. I used mouseY position for the rotation. The background transparency creates the visual effect. I used for loops to repeat patterns. The link to the editor is here.

Reflections

The original art form is very raw and undefined and does not follow many rules. It is a form of expression. I found it challenging to create the visual effects, since this is a manual form of art and isn't popularly digital. Creating this in a digital form altered the essence of the artform in an interesting manner.
